Established
in 2000 by Rev. Bodhi Zenji, a long-time student of Shodo Harada Roshi, Bijapur
One Drop monastery is for boys aged 11-15, who live as monks, maintaining a
rigorous schedule of zazen, daily cleaning and schoolwork. Currently 40 boys
live at the monastery, participating in sutra chanting, meditation, work and
physical exercise. After breakfast, they go off to school from 10:00 am to 5:00
pm each day and return to the monastery to do their homework and have their
evening meal.
The
monastery is located in South India's city of Bijapur, in Karnataka state. The
boys all come from the untouchable caste, which historically has suffered great
oppression. Their training in Zen monastic practices gives them opportunities to
transcend their caste background and join Indian society as well-educated,
productive citizens.

One Drop Monastery India is staffed entirely by volunteers. Building
construction was partially funded by a Bijapur member of parliament. Operations
are funded entirely by donations.
